Synopsis

King Béla IV’s daughter, Kinga, was given in marriage to Boleslaw, the Polish prince, later king. Already in her infant ages, during the holy masses, Kinga was betrothed to Christ, and therefore persuaded her initially reluctant husband, to preserve her virginity even in the bond of marriage. During her visit to the Maramureș salt mine, Kinga’s father promised her that in her new home, in Poland, he would open a salt mine with the help of Hungarian miners, and Kinga, in honor of this gift, threw her engagement ring into the shaft. Later, in the newly opened Wieliczka mine, the miners found that very ring. From then on, the ring and the salt mine became fundamental symbols throughout Kinga’s life, which was filled with hardships.
